Irish Women Writers
Spring 2020
Post-Spring Break Content
(In Response to Covid-19)
Overview: Online Instruction
Post-Spring Break 2020
On Monday, March 16, 2020 — the first day of Spring Break — the University System of Georgia mandated that post-Spring Break instruction at Georgia Southern University must migrate fully online: a large-scale response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Most content for Dr. Keeley’s Irish Women Writers course (indeed, all content with the exception of the final exam ) will appear on this single webpage: irishgeorgia.com/iww. The final exam will appear on the course’s Folio page.
As Spring Break was extended for two weeks — from Monday, March 16, 2020, until Friday, March 27, 2020 — the online instructional period for this course runs from Tuesday, March 31, 2020, until Thursday, April 30, 2020. The final exam will occur on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.
Given that the public-health situation is dynamic — and given that we must (and absolutely want to) prioritize your safety — we reserve the right to change the content of this website, although we will strive to make as few alterations as possible. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding. As we advance in uncertain times, please look out for others — and wash your hands thoroughly and often!
While you already possess a copy of the original syllabus for the course, you may also view that artifact by clicking here.
Study Schedule
Between Tu., Mar. 31, 2020, and Th., Apr. 30, we have ten scheduled class meetings, each of which is being transferred from a live-classroom scenario to the online space. During the final, post-Spring Break phase of Spring Semester 2020, Irish Women Writers will focus on three texts, each of which you have had in hand since the start of the semester in January. In reading order, those texts are: (1) Anne Enright’s 2015 novel, The Green Road; (2) selected lyrics from Sarah Leech’s 1828 collection, Poems on Various Subjects; and (3) Dr. Edith Somerville and Martin Ross’s 1894 novel — generally deemed their masterpiece — The Real Charlotte. (Martin Ross was the pen name adopted by Violet Martin; she and Somerville were cousins.)
